Inflammation. It is something that is really bad for your body in general and one of the things that as an Integrative Medicine Practitioner, we strive to fight against. Many of the things that we suffer from day in and day out can be traced back to one type of inflammation or another. Whether it’s headaches, indigestion, muscle aches, and so much more stems from inflammation. When it comes to treating inflammation, we tend to think about one thing: reaching for that bottle of pills. What if we told you that there is another way to treat and nearly cure inflammation throughout your body without having to resort to lab made pharmaceuticals? In today’s article, we’re going to talk about how food and otherwise improving your nutritional habits can help to reduce and even eliminate inflammation in your body.
Foods That Help Reduce Inflammation
Shifting your diet toward anti-inflammatory foods does not have to mean overhauling everything you eat overnight. Start by incorporating more of the following into your regular meals:
Fatty Fish
- Salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, among the most well-researched natural anti-inflammatory nutrients available. Aim for two to three servings per week if possible.
Leafy Greens and Colorful Vegetables
- Spinach, kale, broccoli, and bell peppers are packed with antioxidants and vitamins C and K, which help protect joint tissue from oxidative stress. The more color on your plate, the better.
Berries
- Blueberries, strawberries, and cherries contain powerful plant compounds called flavonoids that have been shown to reduce inflammatory markers in the body. Tart cherry juice in particular has gained attention for reducing joint pain.
Olive Oil
- Extra virgin olive oil contains a compound called oleocanthal, which has anti-inflammatory properties similar to ibuprofen. Swapping butter or processed oils for olive oil is one of the easiest dietary upgrades you can make.
Turmeric and Ginger
- Both spices have long been used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory properties, and modern research backs them up. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is particularly well-studied for its effects on joint pain and swelling.
Nuts and Seeds
- Walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are excellent plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They also provide magnesium, which supports muscle function and can help reduce tension around the joints.
Nutrition Works Best as Part of a Bigger Plan
Improving your diet is a powerful step, but nutrition works best as part of a comprehensive approach. Chiropractic care restores proper spinal and joint alignment so your body can function as it was designed to. When paired with anti-inflammatory nutrition, regular movement, and good sleep, the results can be truly meaningful.
