Stress and the holiday season seem to go hand in hand, but does it have to be that way? It’s important to be able to make it through the holiday season without stressing out about it too much and to learn to take some time for yourself as well as trying to please everyone around you. In today’s blog, we’re going to talk about some ways in which you can help deal with the stress that the holidays bring regardless of how many in-laws are coming to visit. If you have any questions or your own suggestions for surviving the holidays, please give us a shout out on social media! We’d love to hear from you.

Set Realistic Expectations

They say that one of the biggest sources of conflict and therefore stress, is derived from unmet expectations. As we plan and strategize about our holiday plans with family, we tend to build things up into elaborate and complicated plans where “everything has to go right or the day is ruined!” In reality, everyone is responsible for their own happiness, and you aren’t on the hook for making everyone’s holiday look and feel like a Hallmark special. Temper your expectations and tone things down so that you don’t drive yourself crazy trying to please a hundred different people.

Plan and Prioritize

Dovetailing perfectly into this next section, part of being able to set realistic expectations is to have a solid plan in place ahead of time. Know what needs to be done and then create a quick plan to help accomplish that in the best way. The important thing is realizing that you don’t have to put everything on your shoulders. You should delegate whenever possible and share your progress with your loved ones who are helping you so you can all be on the same page together.

Take Breaks Often

When we set out to tackle the holiday season, we often lose ourselves in the shuffle. It’s important to take breaks whenever possible to help you get through each day. If you work too relentlessly, then you will just be miserable. It helps to keep in mind that the holidays should be fun for everyone, which includes you!

Treat Yourself!

Yes, taking a break each day to sip a cup of hot cocoa or enjoy the latest holiday songs while taking a morning stroll are great options, but during the holidays, you really have to treat yourself. This means that you should give yourself an excellent present for all of the hard work you are doing in order to make everyone else’s holiday magical. Whether that’s splurging on a spa day or finally ordering that limited edition signed book you’ve been wanting, you have our permission to spend a little extra on yourself this holiday season as a reward for not only a job well done, but for surviving yet another round of crazy holiday drama.
