Top 5 Ways to Balance Your Mood

Ladies, do you experience dramatic and unpredictable emotional ups and downs that show up often right before “that time of the month”? Men, do your emotions sometimes get the better of you making you react at “little things”? It happens to all of us. Our emotions cause us to act in a way that can be a complete surprise … I get it! And at this time of year, feeling stressed and out of control with your emotions can be an understatement.

When this happens, do you feel like you are not in control of your actions? It seems as if there is something or someone else pulling your emotional puppet strings. Well, actually, there is.

Your emotional puppetmaster is named hormones.

Balance your hormones and your mind stops racing. Your heart rate returns to a normal and natural level. You don’t think, say and do things you regret. This is because hormones and other chemical messengers work with your brain and nervous system to tell you and your body how to act, what to do and how to perform.

Fortunately, there are some simple, safe, natural and very effective ways to regulate your hormones (and your emotions). Start doing the following 5 things to experience emotional balance and a calm mind, as well as less stress and anxiety.

1 – Exercise for 150 Minutes Each Week

The World Health Organization (WHO), UK’s National Health Service, The Mayo Clinic and The American Heart Association recommend a specific amount of exercise for good health. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be physically active much of the time to experience significant mental and physical health benefits.

Those respected health organizations agree that you should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity each week. That’s just 2.5 hours out of the 168 hours you are given every 7 days. To break that down even further that is just ~ 22 minutes a day.

This practice helps level out hormones and other chemicals that dictate your emotional health. You will also benefit from a lowered risk of developing heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

2 – Use Essential Oils to Balance Your Mood

Essential oils are made from the essence of plant material. They are incredibly dense and concentrated. This means only a few drops of an oil like lavender in a diffuser can calm your mind and help you reach a healthy emotional state. Chamomile, clary sage, rose and frankincense oils also help level out and balance your moods and emotions.

3 – Take up Meditation

Meditation is a practice that is thousands of years old. It was originally developed as a practice to help humans reach a higher state of spiritual enlightenment. While that is still possible according to some meditation experts, no one argues whether or not this mind calming exercise can help you reach emotional health.

Meditation can be performed just about anywhere and only takes a few minutes. This practice has been helping people balance their moods and hormone levels for a long time, and it still works today to provide those benefits.

4 – Balance Your Emotions by Kicking the Sugar Habit

Refined sugar is a killer. There it is. I said it. It needs to be said, and it cannot be overstated. If you look at the appearance and growth of heart disease, many cancers, overweight, obesity, diabetes and neurological disorders, the growth rate mirrors that of sugar being added into your food.

Way back in the 1960s fat was vilified by Big Sugar, and wrongly so. Sugar manufacturers knew full well how terrible refined sugar is for human health and wellness. However, they chose to pursue the almighty dollar in spite of causing countless health problems and countless premature deaths. The health dangers of sugar are plenty, and most people in modern, first-world countries consume 5 or 10 times too much sugar daily. Turn to organic, locally grown honey or organic stevia as a healthy sweetening alternative.

5 – Curb Your Caffeine Intake to Calm Your Emotions

Each year people around the world spend billions of dollars on coffee. Your morning cuppa Joe is probably the beverage most notably linked to caffeine consumption. Unfortunately, the way that caffeine wakes you up and gets you excited and energetic is by causing an immediate stress response in the human body and depletes your brain of over 50% of its oxygen.

I am not saying that a cup of coffee every so often (without cream and refined sugar) is a bad thing. However, it is an addictive substance and unfortunately the average coffee lover drinks 3 or more cups EVERY DAY. You also have to consider all the caffeine that makes its way into snacks and beverages.

Caffeine is a well-known and documented psychoactive drug and stimulant. It causes stress by triggering your age-old fight or flight response. Try a natural herbal tea in place of your coffee and you will find more emotional balance and fewer emotional spikes and valleys.

Ugh I feel like caffeine is the only thing getting me up in the morning! Being real here, as a homeschool mama of 3 I don’t have a lot of things that are ‘mine’. I exercise religiously and eat a lot of vegetables, but often that cup of coffee is what helps me get through allllll the things. I’ll consider it 🤪😉

That is a great way to look at it…considering it!! I love your honesty and and being REAL!
There is no judgment on my end and if you feel that your day and mood are much smoother with having that cup of coffee then by all means continue. I personally notice after about three days of not having caffeine I crash and then feel much better not having it for the remainder of the days.
The most challenging thing about caffeine is research shows that is decreases the blood flow to the brain (UGH!) within minutes (with just one cup) by 50%. It is so toxic that our brain shunts the blood away from it, out of protection and then puts us in a state of fight or flight.
